Data Sharing in Education – Connected Universities for a Digital Future

Digitalisation is fundamentally transforming the higher education sector: teaching, research, and administration are becoming increasingly interconnected through digital means. Data from study programmes, research projects, or campus management holds enormous potential – provided it is shared securely and purposefully.

Data sharing is the next major step in the digital transformation of universities. The targeted exchange of data across institutions lays the foundation for innovative teaching, improved research conditions, and more efficient university administration.

The Challenge

Despite its great potential, data sharing often falls short in practice. Reasons include:

  • Complex legal frameworks

  • Lack of standards and interoperability

  • Limited human and financial resources

  • A wait-and-see attitude among many institutions

These factors prevent universities from fully seizing digital opportunities – posing risks to innovation and international competitiveness.

Our Mission

The Gaia-X Hub Austria addresses these challenges within the Education domain. Together with strong partners from academia, administration, and IT, we connect stakeholders and pool expertise.

Our Goals:

🔍 Build Knowledge
We collect, structure, and share knowledge on data sharing, legal foundations, standards, and best practices.

🔗 Foster Networks
We create platforms for exchange between universities, IT service providers, and ministries – both nationally and across Europe.

🚀 Provide Impulses
We support pilot projects, accompany flagship initiatives, and facilitate access to funding programmes.

Our Network

We collaborate with relevant organisations and projects:

  • European initiatives: e.g. European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), GAIA-X use cases in education, European university alliances

  • National platforms: ACONET, Single Digital Gateway (BKA)

  • Research & Standards: Universities, universities of applied sciences, Know-Center

  • Funding programmes: Digital Europe
