Recap of the Data Spaces Symposium 2025
The Data Spaces Symposium 2025, held on March 11–12 in Warsaw, was a key event for the European data economy. Under the motto “Share data. Unlock value. Boost impact.” leading minds, innovators, and organizations gathered to shape the future of data usage.
Day 1: Focus on Data Spaces as Catalysts for Innovation
The first day began with welcome speeches by prominent figures, including Reinhold Achatz (IDSA), Thomas Hahn (Siemens), and Antonietta Mastroianni (Proximus). This was followed by keynotes on Poland’s digital strategy by Michał Gramatyka and on the European data economy by Bjoern Juretzki from the European Commission.
A highlight of the day was the session on the economic significance of data spaces, where Hubert Tardieu (Gaia-X) spoke about Europe’s role in the global data economy. Other presentations explored the relevance of data spaces for artificial intelligence, with contributions from Noburo Koshizuka (University of Tokyo) and Jan Hajic (Charles University Prague).
In the afternoon, parallel sessions focused on specific domains:
Energy & Green Deal: Discussions on accelerating the energy transition through data spaces, with contributions from Cristina Maier and Kristóf Almásy from the European Commission.
Smart Industry: Talks on promoting intelligent industrial solutions through data spaces, moderated by Giulia Giussani (IDSA) and Thomas Hahn (Siemens).
Day 2: Outlook and Global Perspectives
The second day opened with a recap of Day 1 highlights, presented by Ulrich Ahle (Gaia-X) and Ana Garcia Robles (BDVA). This was followed by discussions on global challenges in the data economy and the role of data spaces, with keynotes from Liu Dong (CFIEC) on China’s numerous data spaces and Justine Ottevaere (Digitaal Vlaanderen) on experiences from Flanders.
Special emphasis was placed on the importance of standardization and interoperability to ensure the global relevance of data spaces. Ewa Zielińska (PKN) highlighted the role of CEN and CENELEC in developing harmonized European standards.
Significance for Gaia-X Hub Austria
For Gaia-X Hub Austria, the symposium offered valuable insights and connections to further develop the national data space strategy. The presented use cases and discussions highlighted the need for close collaboration at the European level to successfully implement data spaces and generate both economic and societal value.
The Data Spaces Symposium 2025 impressively demonstrated how sharing data can unlock new value and provide positive momentum across various sectors. Gaia-X Hub Austria will leverage these insights to further drive digital transformation in Austria.
